Weekend in Shrewsbury

I meant to write this post on Valentines Day, the week after Graeme and I got back from our romantic weekend in Shrewsbury for our two year anniversary. I was going to include a soppy paragraph about what a wonderful two years it has been and how lucky I feel to be able to share such adventures with such a special person ect…ect. But it’s nearing the end of February now and we’ve all had enough of that!

Why we picked Shrewsbury as our destination of choice neither of us can remember. We had ever been before and all I’d heard was that it had some nice buildings! However I am glad we chose there. We stayed at Porterhouse SY1 on St. Mary’s Street, a bed and breakfast/restaurant right in the town centre. We had lunch in the conservatory before being shown up to our room and I decided I liked the place straight away.

I hate to use the word ‘vibe’ but it had a very nice vibe. I loved the exposed brick walls and the mismatch of metal chairs at the tables. I’d read a review on Trip Advisor that said “nothing in the place is straight” but I liked that about it. We stayed in a standard room which was lovely too with a slightly more traditional decor than the restaurant downstairs. I particularly liked the oak beams and the rooms low ceiling which just instantly made it feel cosy. We were excited to get the weekend started!

That first day we had a wonder around Shrewsbury’s main shopping areas and picked up a few bits. Off the main high street on Butcher Row and Wyle Cop were lots of lovely independent and boutique shops perfect for one-off buys and unique gifts. I could have spent all weekend just there!  One of our main goals while we were out was to scout out somewhere we could go for dinner in the evening. There were plenty of old pubs and restaurants along the towns medieval streets but in the end we chose to eat at the popular Indian restaurant, Shalimar near the English Bridge. After dinner we enjoyed some live music and a few drinks at a nice little Cuban bar nearby before calling it a night.

On the Saturday, our second day, we visited Ironbridge, a small village on the River Severn and about 30 minutes drive from Shrewsbury. On a nice day it would have been a lovely place for a wander. We had a walk over the bridge but it was too cold and rainy to venture much further. Instead we took refuge in a nice little tea room to warm up and enjoyed a cream tea. From Ironbridge we drove to Telford, a relatively new town and quite modern in contrast to everywhere else we’d visited. After a bit more shopping we headed back to our room for a rest.

emma nelson photography shrewsbury blogemma nelson photography shrewsbury blog emma nelson photography shrewsbury blog DSC_7395 DSC_7397On Saturday evening we didn’t venture very far. We’d booked a table for dinner at Porterhouse so all we had to do was toddle downstairs. We came down early in time for happy hour at the bar and indulged in a few cocktails before our meal. I had a blogger fail moment and forgot to take a photo of our food before we demolished it but let me tell you, it was delicous!

emma nelson photography shrewsbury blogOf course the day we were leaving to go home the weather was glorious. As we were bundling our bags into the boot of the Mercedes hire car Graeme had organised for the weekend we remembered we hadn’t visited Shrewsbury Castle! I do love a good castle. We were able to park alongside the castle as we were heading out of the town to catch a quick glimpse. And by glimpse I mean peering through the large wooden gates in-front of the castle as it turned out it was closed for Winter. Ah well, another time maybe…

My 2015 Best Instagram Photos #2015best9

There’s been a  trend sweeping social media for the last few days that involves using software to generate a best 9 list on Instagram. Well here’s mine!

emmanelsonphotography #2015best9

Here is a quick overview of my most liked Instagram photos of 2015, starting at the top left:

1. At the beginning of the year I set up a little workstation in the corner of my bedroom for photo editing and blogging. It served me well but  I’m currently in the process of moving house and shall  have my own little office soon! Not to mention a brand spanking new computer. Very exciting!

2. Like a proud parent I set up this photo back in March to show off my new camera. I’ve been so happy with my Nikon D800 since I got it  and it has accompanied me to every wedding since. This year one of my resolutions is to master it’s video function.

3. A montage of details from Fay and Alex’s gorgeous wedding back in September. You can see more of their wedding here.

4. I decided one afternoon to make a little fort for Graeme and I to hide out in. I was pretty chuffed with it even if it did make me feel like an eight year old.  I think Graeme was secretly impressed too. We ended up eating our dinner in there while watching Age of Adeline before falling asleep. I must say I did wake up with a bad back…I’m not as young as I think I am!

5. This was the awesome breakfast Graeme and I had whilst staying at Roslyn House in Pateley Bridge last September. My goodness it was good! Roslyn House was a lovely B&B too. The owners Judith and Bob made us feel right at home and upgraded our room for us on arrival. I’d highly recommend it for anyone looking for somewhere to stay while exploring the Yorkshire Dales.

6. A lovely photo of Hannah and Paul’s first dance at their wedding at Bolton School last year. Hannah’s dress was just amazing.

7. Same wedding! Graeme doing a sterling job working the Photobooth at the evening reception. Good lad.

8. A snap of the Eiffel Tower from our trip to Paris last April for Mums 50th Birthday. I could go back there time and time again.

9. Working hard in a coffee shop getting Kim and Alex’s wedding images ready. Oh and a sneaky granola square too 😉

Birthday weekend in The Lakes

My birthday weekend was just the best. Graeme booked us a little town house in Kendal in the Lake District to celebrate the occasion. I say little, the house he booked through Airbnb was actually quite big with three floors, 4 bedrooms, a wood fire, a  lovely kitchen diner leading to a private yard where we sat in the mornings and drank coffee. The location was really good too… 15 minute walk from Kendal town centre and a 10 minute walk from the castle.

We spent our first day exploring Kendal, mostly shopping and making some ‘interesting purchases’. We stopped for some afternoon tea at a tiny little tea room on the main highstreet before heading back to the house for a nap (yes this is how we roll and I love it!). After recharging at the house in the afternoon we wandered up to Kendal castle to catch the sunset in the evening. It was lovely, although the walk back in the dark was a bit scary! We spent the rest of our evening on the sofa with takeaway and a movie after many painstaking attempts to get the wood fire started.

The next day we drove to Ambleside for breakfast at The Apple Pie Cafe & Bakery (highly recommend).  After my American pancakes,  Heather and Laura came to meet us for the day. We had a nosey in National Trust’s Bridge House and then walked up to the waterfalls before driving to Wateredge and hopping on a boat to Bowness. The weather was so nice but it was absolutely freezing on the lake. We enjoyed fish and chips in Bowness (I forgot to take a photo before I wolfed them down but they were epic) and did a bit of Christmas shopping!

After lunch we got the boat back to Waterhead to jump back in the car. We had a nice scenic drive to Keswick where we made it just in time to visit Puzzling Place, an optical illusion and puzzles museum. It quite a small ‘out of the way’ place but I’d highly recommend going if you’re in the area, especially if you’re into puzzles or rolling around the floor and and that type of thing.

From Keswick we drove back to Wateredge for another Lake District sunset and for dinner at the Wateredge Inn. Heather and Laura left us after dinner to head back to Bolton while Graeme and I made our way back to the Kendal town house. We decided to stay in the attic room that night with its big bay window to watch the Supermoon! The lunar eclipse definitely ended the weekend on the best note. Here’s to happy birthdays!

Kim & Alex Wedding – Wellington Park Leyland

Kim and Alex just didn’t stop smiling all day, it was such a happy fun wedding to photograph. The weather wasn’t too kind to us but that didn’t matter. The couple had a beautiful ceremony at St Andrews Church in Leyland, followed by a lovely afternoon reception at Wellington Park . I absolutely loved the vintage pastel theme, especially the bridesmaid dresses and flowers. Little handmade touches from friends and family made the day even more lovely.

Red Lion Hotel – Fay & Alex Wedding

Fay and Alex tied the knot at the Red Lion Hotel in Burnsall just outside of Skipton. The Red Lion is a gorgeous 16th Century pub by the river Wharfe in the Yorkshire Dales and was the perfect setting for Fay and Alex’s big day. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for their special day by the river. A day filled with gorgeous details from afternoon cocktails, candles and vintage florals to  the rustic chalkboard cake by Rolling Pins and Apron Strings. And can we talk about Fay’s dress please?! So beautiful. Such a beautiful day and full of sunshine, happiness and relaxed elegance.

Happy Birthday Little One!

happy birthday emma nelson photography

Happy Birthday Heather!

I know you’ve been stressed recently so I hope you can take today to chill out and enjoy yourself!

You help me so much in my journey to creating my own business, just know that I am always here for you and it wont be long until all the assignments and teaching placements are behind you and you’ll be a qualified teacher! Even if you then decide, you want to become a dentist/lawyer/astronaut (I know what you’re like!).

So Happy Birthday! I won’t say lets make it the best year yet because we are saving that for next year 😉 But have a good one!

Love your big Sis xx

Tweet Challenge – Update.

Emma Nelson Photography Tweet Challenge

So its been a week since I set myself the Twitter Tweet Challenge. My aim was to post 2 tweets a day in the hopes of kickstarting a more regular use of Twitter.

So how did I do? At the start of the week I was doing pretty well, remembering to share my Pintrest boards and Instagram posts with a few random tweets thrown in between. I did start to dwindle towards the end of the week but I have definitely got in the habit of checking my Twitter feed more regularly, which is good. I now follow alot of interesting photography related pages which I like to keep updated with.

Some of the new pages I now follow:

The British Journal of Photography – This one is my favourite for  photography news from the editors of the British Journal of Photography (a monthly magazine for professional photographers).

Magnum Photos – An archive of iconic Photographs produced by Magnum photographers, updated daily with new work from all over the world. Good for when you’re in need of some inspiration.

Feature Shoot – Showcases new projects from emerging photographers as well as established photographers. I really like reading about photographers ideas behind thier projects so this one is a good one for that.

Jasmine Star – My absolute favourite wedding photographer, I follow her on Facebook, Youtube and Instagram so now I can complete the collection!

PetaPixel – I enjoy this feed for daily nuggets of interesting, quirky and undiscovered examples of photography and photo art.

So at the start of the week my tweet count was on 11. Today it stands at 28. Meaning I did an average 2.48 tweets a day throughout the week! I’ll take that! I also gained 52 Followers, result!

Maybe I’ll check back when I reach 100 posts 😉 If you’d like to follow me you can find me at https://twitter.com/emmanelsonphoto

Tweet Challenge (Being a Twitter Noob)

I’ve never really got into Twitter. It is probably the only form of social media that I’ve never quite got my head around but recently I’ve been thinking about ways I could utilize it to market and promote both my business and my blog.

I know that a lot of wedding photographers use Twitter as a way off connecting with other wedding industry vendors and potential clients whilst keeping up to date with trends and new products. Although I haven’t quite figured out the whole ‘tweeting’ thing, I feel that I follow enough photographers on the site to understand the importance of building these connections and think it is high time I stop seeing Twitter as a big, scary world of hashtags and @ symbols and really try to understand and utilize this form of social media as a marketing platform.

@emmanelsonhoto

The Tweet Challenge

In light of these thoughts, I have decided to set myself a challenge; 2 tweets a day for a week. To some this may sound a bit simple but I really do think I will find this a challenge. I am hoping that by tweeting each day, it will not only get me into a habit of posting to my Twitter account and checking the Twitter app but it will also give me a better insight into how it all works!

So, my tweet count is currently on 11. By this time next week i would like it to be at a minimum of 25. Lets see shall we?

If you would like to follow my week of tweets and hopefully more in the future please follow the link below!

Bank Holiday Monday Morning Loveliness

coast to coast bank holiday breakfastcoast to coast bank holiday breakfast

I don’t usually feel the hype around bank holidays (as I’m usually working) but this morning was lovely. Graeme surprised me with flowers as I was in the bathroom, brushing my teeth and then whisked us off for breakfast at Coast to Coast. I think half of Bolton must have had the same idea as it was pretty busy. Graeme ordered pancakes (my usual choice) and I decided on the millionaire waffles for a change. It felt like eating dessert for breakfast which was awesome and the waffles went perfectly with my caramel latte. Mmmm. The best bit was, we then came home and went back to bed!  Perfect bank holiday laziness.
